Medical Statement
Your GP does not issue medical statements to companies and institutions. They can only respond to written questions from a medical advisor at such institutions. This response is addressed to the medical advisor, and only with your written permission for your GP to specifically respond to these questions. The requesting party will be charged a fee for this.
Various institutions and companies attempt to circumvent this procedure by pressuring you, the patient, to request and hand over a copy of your complete medical file from your GP. This is not only illegal but also a violation of your privacy and your interests: your complete file risks falling into the hands of medically unauthorized individuals and being used against you.
Some employers require a medical statement from your GP in the event of illness. This is prohibited by law in the Netherlands. Only the occupational health physician is permitted to request information regarding your incapacity for work and decides whether your sick leave is justified.
